What is Mensa?

Mensa was founded in Oxford, England in 1946 by Dr. Lance Ware and Roland Berrill, who wanted to bring intelligent people together for mutual interest and benefit. "Mensa" is Latin for "table". Ours is a round-table society wherein no individual member has preference. The society is non-profit, non-partial, and non-racial. Mensa has no political, religious or ideological affiliations. Mensa is a worldwide organization with over 100,000 members in more than 100 countries. The society is made up of national, regional and local groups within those countries. Hong Kong Mensa was established in 1988 and has over 350 members.

Mensa Activities

Hong Kong Mensa regularly organizes a wide range of activities for its members. You can meet interesting people of all ages by attending Mensa sponsored events:

·         talks and lectures given by members and invited speakers on a broad range of topics

·         outdoor activities such as country walks, boating excursions and meteor watching

·         barbecues, Chinese and western dinners and informal get-togethers

Within the society Special Interest Groups (SIGs) throughout the world provide a means of communication between members who have a common interest. Mensa's aim is to provide members with a friendly and intellectually stimulating social environment.

SIGHT

SIGHT stands for Service for Information, Guidance and Hospitality to Travelers. This is a program which assists traveling Mensans by putting them in touch with Mensa members from the local chapter in the area they are visiting.

How can I join Hong Kong Mensa?

Hong Kong Mensa is a recognized chapter of Mensa International, the world-wide society for intelligent people. To qualify for membership, applicants must score in the top 2% of the population on a standard Intelligence Quotient (IQ) test. There is no other basis for membership, whoever you are, whatever you do. Don't be deterred by the 2% figure, because if you think you are intelligent then you probably are - historically, a much larger percentage of people (50-80%) who take the test will pass it.

No preparation is needed for the test but you must be aged 14 or over to take the test and living in Hong Kong.
